Patriots Roster Roundup: 3/4/2020

The Patriots have been busy making additions to their lineup, rotation, and coaching staff.

Jimmy Paredes

The Patriots have re-signed Jimmy Paredes for a 2nd season (his 3rd in the ALPB). Paredes split time between the infield and outfield in 2019 with Somerset while slashing .265/.303/.470 and tying his career-high of 13 home runs after joining the team in late-June. Paredes has batted .289/.326/.480 in his Atlantic League career and projects to feature heavily in the Patriots lineup due to his positional flexibility and switch-hitting ability.

Projections: 240 PA, 33 Runs Created, 11 HR, .785 OPS, 1.2 WAR (MLB Equiv. Ian Happ)

High-end Projections: 275 PA, 41 Runs Created, 14 HR, .805 OPS, 1.6 WAR

Low-end Projections: 190 PA, 22 Runs Created, 7 HR, .745 OPS, 0.5 WAR

Jay Gause

After pitching his first two ALPB seasons with the York Revolution, Jay Gause has been signed by the Somerset Patriots for 2020. The right-handed starter is coming back from Tommy John surgery and may face some innings limitations, but still projects as a middle of the rotation arm for the Patriots during his age-28 season.

Low-end Projections: 50 IP, 4.62 ERA 1.604 WHIP, 4.2 BB/9, 6.8 K/9

Chuck Stewart

Chuck Stewart has been named the Somerset Patriots hitting coach for 2020. Stewart’s first ALPB season was in 2019 serving as hitting coach for the New Britain Bees. Under his leadership, the Bees offense posted the league’s 2nd best batting average, on-base percentage, and OPS, as well as the league’s best strikeout-to-walk ratio. On the other hand, Somerset’s offense scored the 2nd fewest runs in the Atlantic League in 2019.
