Barnstormers Roster Roundup: 3/4/2020

In Lancaster, Jared Lakind could fill many roles on the Barnstormers’ pitching staff. Meanwhile, Melvin Mercedes looks to bounce back from injury in 2020.

Jared Lakind

The Barnstormers have re-signed lefty Jared Lakind for his 3rd season in Lancaster. Lakind came out of the bullpen for Lancaster in 2018 and spent 2019 in the rotation, so he provides useful flexibility to the roster. With his ERA creeping up near 5.00 during 2019, Lakind seems to be a serviceable option in the rotation, but might be better suited coming out of the bullpen. At this point, projections still show his potential numbers as a starter but check back for updated projections if the pre-season indicates Lakind might not be a regular in the rotation.

Projections: 130 IP, 4.38 ERA, 1.604 WHIP, 3.6 BB/9, 7.5 K/9

High-end Projections: 145 IP, 3.35 ERA, 1.332 WHIP, 3.3 BB/9, 7.9 K/9

Low-end Projections: 120 IP, 5.13 ERA 1.615 WHIP, 3.7 BB/9, 7.3 K/9

Melvin Mercedes

The Barnstormers have re-signed Melvin Mercedes for 2020 after his 2019 season was cut short by a broken ankle. Before being interrupted by an ill-fated attempt to steal second base, the switch-hitting utility infielder batted .264/.329/.337 in 214 plate appearances. Mercedes sat out winter ball this year, presumably to focus on his recovery. Unfortunately, the lack of game action since the injury and potentially increased need for early-season rest makes projecting Mercedes a bit difficult. However, Lancaster has indicated they seem to plan on playing Melvin at multiple positions and have not mentioned a delay in him starting 2020.

Be sure to check back before the season begins for Melvin’s 2020 projections!
